A Study to Evaluate the Effectiveness of Video Assisted Teaching on Alcohol Abuse among College Students in a Selected College at Rajkot, Gujarat

ABSTRACT:

The study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of video assisted teaching on knowledge regarding hazards of Alcohol abuse among the students of selected college at Rajkot. The study was conducted in a selected college at Rajkot, Gujarat. Total samples were 40. Non probability convenient sampling technique was used. The research tool was developed in English after an extensive of literature and experts opinion it was translated in to Gujarati by language experts, the structured questionnaire was used as an instrument to measure the level of knowledge regarding effectiveness of video assisted teaching on knowledge regarding hazards of Alcohol abuse. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to calculate the data.

INTRODUCTION:

Alcoholism is any condition that result in the continued consumption of alcoholic beverages, despite health problems and negative social consequences. It is a chronic disease manifested by repeated drinking that produce injuring to the drinker’s health or to his social or economic functioning.1

 

The incidence of alcohol dependence is 2% in India while 20-40% of study age about 15 years are current users of alcohol and nearly 10% of them are regular or excessive users. Nearly, 15-30% of patients are developing alcohol related problems and seeking admission in psychiatric hospitals.2

 

 

Addiction to alcohol and drugs has become a problem for the individual, family, community. With a large number of people taking to Alcohol abuse due to psychological and socio-cultural factors, the health problem have also became alarming. Alcoholic anonymous describes ALCOHOL ABUSE as a physical condition associated with mental obsession. It is considered to have physical, psychological, sociological and alcoholic of sickness.3

 

NEED FOR THE STUDY:

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that about 140 million people throughout the world suffer from alcohol dependence4. The incidence of alcohol dependence are 2010 in Indi. 20-40% of study age above 15 years. In 2014, 87.6% of people age 18 or older reported that they drank alcohol at some point in their lifetime. 56.9% reported that they drank in the past month.

 

 

Some fact:

·       25% in partial remission.

·       27.3% in partial remission

·       11.8% asymptomatic drinkers.

·       35.9% fully recovered – made up of 17.7% low risk drinkers plus

·       18.2% abstainess.

·       18% of alcoholics commit suicide.

·       Approximately 10% of all dementia cases are alcohol related making alcohol the 2nd leading cause of dementia.

 

OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY:

1.     To assess pre-test knowledge of Alcohol abuse.

2.     To assess the effectiveness of video assisted teaching.

3.     To find out the association between pre-test knowledge score of College students regarding Alcohol abuse with their selected demographic variables.

 

MATERIAL AND METHODS:

Research Design:

Pre- Experimental research design was chosen for this study without randomization.

Setting: The study was conducted in selected College at Rajkot.

 

Population:

Accessible population for this study includes students of selected college at Rajkot.

 

Sample:

Selected 40 samples.

 

Sampling Technique:

The samples were selected for this study by non-probability convenient sampling techniques.

 

Data analysis:

The demographic variables were organized by using descriptive measures (frequency and percentage), effectiveness of VAT evaluated by t-test, and the association between the level of knowledge and the selected demographic variables were assessed by Chi-square test.

 

FINDINGS:

The major findings of the study include:

A. Findings related to demographic characteristic of subjects

·       Majority of the samples 15(37.5%) were between 17-19 years age group

·       Males and females were equal in strength

·       From each class equally 10 members were selected

·       Majority of them 33(82.5%) were belongs to Hindu    religion

·       Most of the samples 33(82.5%) were belongs at Urban area

·       Majority of them were from Nuclear family

·       22(55%) were never exposed to any information regarding Alcohol abuse

 

B. Findings according to assessment of Knowledge:

During pre-test 2(5%) were having adequate knowledge, 13(32.5%) were having moderate level knowledge and 25(62.5%) were having inadequate knowledge and during post-test 12(30%) were improved to Adequate knowledge,28(70%) were to moderate and no one was in inadequate Knowledge.

 

C. Findings according to effectiveness of Video Assisted teaching:

The pre-test mean was 14.0500 and post-test 19.6750,the mean difference 5.6250.Standard deviation in pre-test 2.86401 and post-test 3.60475;the obtained t-value was 14.669***and degree of freedom 39,probability 3.5581,the obtained t-value was highly significant at 0.001 level.

 

D. Findings according to association between level of Knowledge and demographic variables:

Out of all demographic variables like Age, Gender, Education, Family income, Religion, Residence, Type of family, Exposure of information regarding Alcohol abuse two variables (Gender and Religion) were having significant association at 0.05 level.

 

CONCLUSION:

The main conclusion from this present study is that respondents studying in selected college of Rajkot had inadequate and moderate level of knowledge in pre-test and after administering Video assisted teaching majority of them gained adequate knowledge. Health teaching would prove to be an effective educational method which changes Knowledge of people and improves healthy behaviours among them.
